MAU closes out regular season with win over Brattleboro
BRATTLEBORO >> The Mount Anthony Union High School boys basketball team closed out the regular season with a win over Brattleboro on Friday night, 59-48.
Leading the Patriots to their 17th win of the season was Jonas Parker, who scored a team-high 24 points on the night.
Fellow senior Damon Burgess was also in double figures on the night for MAU, scoring 19 points in the Patriots victory.
With the win MAU ends the regular season at 17-3 and will be the fourth see in the Division I state playoff tournament.
Cambridge rallies to win opening round matchup
CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. >> The Cambridge Central School boys basketball team was able to advance to the first round of the Section II, Class C tournament with a 45-37 win over Corinth on Friday night.
Down 22-7 going into halftime, the Indians outscored Corinth 38-15 in the second half to comeback and get the victory.
Leading the Cambridge second half rally was junior Shawn Lewieux, who had a game-high 12 points in the contest.
Seniors Kordell Benson and Daniel Genevick both were also in double figures on the night for Cambridge, each scoring 10 points to help the Indians win their eighth game of the season.
With the win Cambridge improves to 8-13 on the year and will now play number one seed Berne-Knox-Westerlo on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
MAU, BBA compete at MVL championship
BRATTLEBORO >> Burr and Burton Academy's Scott Mooney won the Nordic ski race at the VABEC trails on Thursday.
Mooney took the event in 16 minutes, four seconds, just ahead of Brattleboro's Isaac Freitas-Eagen.
In the team score, Brattleboro won with 24 points, with Woodstock right behind with 29. BBA was third with 33 and MAU fourth with 70.
Neil Thorley was fourth in 16:52, Anders Proft also had an eighth-place finish in 18:27. Paton Marion was 20th to finish the scoring.
Mount Anthony's Bill Greenwald was first for the Patriots, 14th overall with a 19:40. Ben Doucette came in 16th, Thomas Hendery was 18th and Noah Payne was 24th.
On the girls side, Woodstock won the team event with a 14-point effort, led by sisters Abby and Lauren Kaija. Brattleboro was next with 39 points, while MAU and BBA tied at 45.
The top local finisher was BBA's Helena Bigelow, who was fifth overall in 20:37. Raili Utiger was tied for seventh, Carly Gayda was 12th and Ann Fisher was 27th. For Mount Anthony, Allie Boudreau was tied for seventh, Erica Hale was 11th, Bri Zipprich was 15th and Emily Altland 16th.
VPA sets prices for tourney game
BENNINGTON >> The Vermont Principals Association has set it's ticket prices for all playdown and quarterfinal rounds in this years state championship games in both basketball and hockey games.
Admission for adults will be $6.00 and students and senior citizens will be $5.00. Season passes and faculty/staff passes can not be used at VPA Tournament games as well.
Bennington Little League sign-ups
BENNINGTON >> The Bennington Little League will hold registration for this coming season on Wednesday February 17th, and Thursday February 18th, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bennington Firehouse on River Street.
Children ages 5-9 by August 30th, or 10-12 by April 30th, who wish to play this season must register.
This registration is for the entire Bennington School District area.
Even returning players need to register. Birth certificates (Xerox copies, no originals necessary) are required at time of registration.
