MAU at NHSCA nationals

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Mount Anthony Union High School senior heavyweight Jesse Webb is still in contention for his third national title after the first day of the National High School Coaches Association tournament on Friday.

Webb is the only Patriot still in the winners bracket after two victories on Friday. After a first-round bye, Webb beat Georgia’s Shakeem Lassiter 8-4, then pinned New York’s Wyatt Morris in 1:43 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Webb will face California’s Gary Miltenberger on Saturday.

The other senior, Austin Price at 182 pounds, was 1-1 on the day. He beat Maryland’s Corrice Davis, 11-4, then lost to New York’s Mark Tracy 3-0 to go into the wrestlebacks.

Sophomore Tyler Raetz won two matches on Friday, going 2-1. He beat Danbury, Conn.’s Joey Hulse, 8-2, and New Jersey’s Kyle Dinapoli, 9-6, to reach the round of 16. There, he lost to Kansas’ Michael Prieto, 5-2, to descend into the wrestlebacks.

"Tyler had a decent day," said MAU coach Scott Legacy.

Troy Gassaway was 1-1 in the junior tournament at 120 pounds. He won his first match, a rematch against New Jersey’s Andy Hernandez, 7-3, but lost to New York’s James Szymanski, 6-5, on a "tough call at the end of the match," according to Legacy.

Other match winners on Friday were Quint Pearce (freshman 126), Dylan Lafountain (junior 132) and Tyler Mattison (junior 195). Mattison beat Tennessee’s Kiel Russell, 5-4, before being pinned by Missouri’s Jordan Davis.

The wrestlebacks start on Saturday, as well as the quarterfinals and semifinals.
