MAU ace Brandmeyer sixth at New Englands

CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Mount Anthony Union High School senior Marc Brandmeyer finished sixth at the 78th annual New England high school cross country championships Saturday, the best finish among Vermont boys in the field.

Brandmeyer paced the Mount Anthony boys team (28th of 30 teams) with a time of 16 minutes 29.75 seconds. He was 17 seconds behind winner Henry Wynne of Staples (Conn.). South Burlington’s Malcolm Plunkett and Montpelier’s Daniel Grosvenor also cracked the top 10, finishing eighth and 10th, respectively.

"He ran one of the best races of the day," MAU coach Jim Dulin said. of Brandmeyer. "He came from way back at the start. He really had to fight back."

Other Mount Anthony finishers, in order, included Luke Johnas, Andrew Brandmeyer, Zach Redden, Caleb Cohen, Andy Seward and Jeff Delucia.

Richford’s Elle Purrier (18:42.44) won the girls race to defend her crown, edging Champlain Valley’s Taylor Spillane, the runner-up, by 21 seconds. The CVU girls team, two-time defending champion, finished third.

Youth wrestling

BENNINGTON -- Mount Anthony Youth Wrestling will hold sign-ups sessions Nov. 27-29 at the MAU cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Practice begins the week of Dec. 4 and the season runs through March until the MAU tournament on the March 23.

MAU Nordic seeks gear

BENNINGTON -- MAU’s Nordic Ski Team needs donations of gently used cross country ski racing equipment: Skis, poles, gloves, pants and jackets.

Bennington youth hoops

BENNINGTON -- Bennington youth basketball for first- to fourth-grade boys will run from 10 a.m. to noon on seven Sundays over the next three months: Nov. 18 and 25, Dec. 2, 9 and 16, and Jan. 6 and 13. Email to sign up.

SVC baseball camp

BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College Baseball and head coach Dave Gage are now accepting registrations for the 2012 SVC Baseball Winter Camp, being held in the Mountaineer Athletic Center on the campus of SVC, December 27-28.

The camp is open to players in grades 1-12, with those in 1-6 participating in a morning session (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) and all 7-12 grade campers attending a separate afternoon session (12 p.m. - 2 p.m.). Accompanying Coach Gage will be SVC assistant baseball and hitting coach Robby Hisert, as well as current Mountaineers.

The cost is $80 per player; tuition is no-refundable and must accompany each application. Personal checks will not be accepted later than five days prior to the camp.

From 2008-2011, Gage was the starting second baseman for the Mountaineers and served as one of the team’s captains during his final three seasons.

His leadership and play helped guide his team to the NECC playoffs in the 2009, 2010, and the 2011 seasons, the first three playoff appearances in school history.

Hisert played professionally overseas in Italy after a successful playing career at Schenectady County Community College. He has also played professionally with independent teams over the last few seasons.
