Marauders swim to personal bests vs Brattleboro


BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Marauders competed in their final home meet against Brattleboro on Tuesday. Although the Marauders suffered a loss, they had many qualifications for the upcoming State Championship meet.

Emily Barlow had a fine day, winning five events -- the 100 breaststroke, the 200 freestyle and the 50 breaststroke, along with two relays, the 200 medley and the 200 free.

Zoey Haar did that one better with six victories. She was part of the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, along with individual wins in the 50 free, 50 fly, 50 back and 100 free.

Phebe Hall won five races, the two relays with Barlow and Haar and the 100 breast, 200 free and 50 breast.

In some of the younger age groups, Summer Nichols and Sienna Brosemer won all of their races as well. Kylee Hall was 4-for-4, taking part in the medley and free relays, along with the 100 breast and the 50 breast.

For the boys, Zach LaForest won all six of his races, including the 200 medley relay, the 50 free, the 50 fly, the 50 back, the 100 free, and the 200 free relay.

The Marauders will compete again this weekend in Rutland at the Districts meet (Southern Vermont Championships).

Goldsmith tourney

BENNINGTON -- The annual Lee Goldsmith Memorial Soccer Tournament will take place on August 9 this year at Willow Park in Bennington.

The tournament, which honors the former MAU athlete who died tragically in 2009 after his fight with cancer, will start at 11 a.m.

Teams must be made up of high school students (as of September 2014), and must have at least five males on the team. Co-ed teams are allowed, but the team must be made up predominantly of males.

The tournament will feature 7-on-7 soccer, with six outfield players and a goalie. The games will be 25 minutes long, and there will be large goals and no offside rule.

The cost will be $70 per team, and the winning team will receive championship t-shirts. To register, call or text MAU boys soccer coach Mike Molloy at 802-375-4006. Teams will pay to play on the day of the tournament. Teams must be registered prior to the morning of the 9th. Check in will run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Catamount wrestling dance

BENNINGTON -- The Catamount Wrestling club is hosting a fund raiser dance on Thursday July 24th from 7-9 pm for students in grades five through eight. The fee to get in is $5.00.

The dance is at the Bennington Moose Lodge on Main Street and will be chaperoned by adult parents of Catamount Wrestling members. Proceed will benefit Catamount Wrestling. For more information please contact Wayne Call at 802-952-8932.

SVC hoops camp

BENNINGTON -- Southern Vermont College men’s basketball coach Dan Engelstad will be hosting one more summer camp for area youth players.

The camp will run from August 4 to August 8, with each day’s session going from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Friday, the session will end at noon.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 3 through 11.
