Marauders shine at SVSL district tournament


RUTLAND — Over the weekend, the Bennington Marauders competed at the Southern Vermont Summer League district championships.

Overall, the Marauders placed third in their Division II pairing.

Swimmers that shined for the Marauders at the meet on their girls squad were Phebe Hall in 17 and up age group with first place finish in the 50 yard backstroke and two second place finishes in the 100 yard butterfly and backstroke races.

Grace Burhans and Jessica Letourneau each had fifth place finishes in the 100 yard intermediate medley and 50 yard breaststroke respectively for the Marauders in the 13-14 age division.

Burhans also placed fourth in the 100 yard backstroke.

On the boys side, Zach LaForest had a great day for the Marauders in the 15-16 age group.

LaForest placed first in the 50 yard freestyle, backstroke events, while also placing second in the 100 yard freestyle and third in the 50 yard butterfly.

Anthony Mazzola was very impressive for the Marauders in the 13-14 age group with three first place finishes, winning the 50 and 100 yard backstroke events and the 50 yard breaststroke, while also placing third in the 100 yard intermediate medley.

Camden Madison had a first place finish in 11-12 age group for the Marauders in the 50 yard backstroke.

The Marauders will now focus on preparing for their state tournament next weekend, where they will have 27 swimmers competing in the tournament.

Local basketball camp

BENNINGTON >> Basketball players who are looking to take it to the next level and want to improve their games, we got the camp for you.

Jared and Kyle Callanan will be holding a two-day basketball camp for local players on August 20th and 21st.

The cost to participate in the camp is $50 dollars a person for the weekend.

The camp is broken down into two hour sessions on both days.

Groups will be based on age and gender. No group will have more than 12 people because of the effort to give some individual attention to those attending the camp.

High school, middle school and AAU coach will be in attendance at the camp.

SVC basketball camp upcoming

BENNINGTON >> The Southern Vermont College basketball camp will take place starting August 8 and go through August 11. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day at Southern Vermont College and will be led by SVC head coach Dan Engelstad and assisted by the rest of the SVC staff.

The camp is for kids from second through 11th grade and is for both boys and girls. The sessions will focus on offensive and defensive fundamentals through drills, individual instruction and team play. Instruction will be directed toward players with basic knowledge seeking to advance their skill level and advanced players looking to build on basic skills.

The cost is $200 and will include a camp t-shirt and a personalized evaluation from camp staff.

Wiffle ball tournament for MAU class of 2017

BENNINGTON >> The Mount Anthony Class of 2017 will hold a family-friendly wiffle ball tournament on Sunday, August 21, starting at 3 p.m., to raise funds to support graduation activities for students.

Games will be held at the NorShaft Lions Park and Welling Field in North Bennington. Teams can be composed of up to eight people and the cost is $75 per team. Each team will be guaranteed two games because the tournament is double elimination.

Prizes will be awarded for the Winning Team, Best Dressed, Most Team Spirit, Team with the Greatest Age Range, and Sportsmanship Award. The rain-date will be Monday, August 22.

New England Alliance softball tryouts

BENNINGTON >> The New England Alliance Girls Fast Pitch Softball tryouts will be held at the Mount Anthony Union Middle School, located at 747 East Road, Bennington.

Tryouts for U14 and U16 players are August 13 from 10 a.m. to noon, and August 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Rain dates are the next day at the same time.

If you are unable to attend these dates and times we will hold individual tryouts for ladies unable to attend the posted tryout dates and times.

Hoosick Falls soccer club registration

HOOSICK, N.Y. >> Registration is open for the fall 2016 season of in-house recreation Youth Soccer at the Hoosick Falls Soccer Club. The group is running an early bird special registration price of $45 from July 20 to August 15.

Vermont soccer official training

BENNINGTON >> Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Vermont Soccer Officials Association and becoming eligible to officiate varsity and sub-varsity soccer games is encouraged to attend a training in Southern Vermont.

The training is being held at Whitcomb High School in Bethel on August 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The training includes learning the rules of the game, a test, and a field practice. SVC cross-country camp

BENNINGTON >> Southern Vermont College head cross country and track and field coach Kathleen Newton has announced that she will be holding her first summer clinic on Tuesday, August 9 at the SVC campus.

The event will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and is intended for children entering grades 7-12. The cost is $50 per participant with all proceeds to benefit the SVC cross country programs. In the event of rain, the clinic will be held Wednesday, August 10. The camp will begin at the Mountaineer Athletic Center.

Members of the Southern Vermont cross country teams will be on hand to guide the partakers through the day and around the College campus. Activities will include showing how to properly warm up, the teaching of correct running technique, strength exercises, injury prevention and treatment, and a stretching session. The Mountaineers will also lead the participants on trail runs around the SVC campus.
