Man accused of gun threat given suspended sentence

BENNINGTON -- A man accused of threatening another with a gun and scamming a Shaftsbury resident out of an industrial heater in an unrelated incident pleaded guilty Tuesday and received a suspended sentence.

Christopher J. Gagne, 40, also known as Hans Christian Peterson, pleaded guilty to simple assault by menace, false pretenses or tokens, and false information to police. He received a one- to two-year suspended sentence and two years on probation.

According to Bennington Police, on March 15, 2013, Jamell Rogers came to the Bennington Police Department with James Kinne and Daniel Turcotte. Rogers said he was Gagne’s roommate at 218 Union St. and they had argued over Gagne wanting to manage Rogers’ singing career.

Rogers said Gagne and himself got into a shoving match and Gagne pushed him against a closet.

Kinne told police he arrived as the argument was happening and that Gagne threatened to shoot Rogers.

According to Rogers, Gagne was putting a handgun in his waistband when Rogers was leaving, making Rogers think Gagne had the gun in his hand when he threatened to shoot.

Another affidavit by Bennington Police described a complaint made by Ed Corey, of Shaftsbury, who said he contacted Gagne to have an industrial heater repaired. Gagne had put an ad in the local Tri-State Pennysaver billing himself as "Mr. Fix-It." Corey said once Gagne had the heater, he stopped returning calls. Corey learned who Gagne was through his landlord, who also reported having rent related issues with him.

Police found the heater in Gagne’s home. He told police he got carbon monoxide poisoning and the online work order program he uses to keep track of clients lapsed.
