Locals compete in Nordic Cup


BENNINGTON >> Scores of local soccer players competed in one of the biggest sporting events in the state of Vermont last weekend.

The Nordic Cup brought in travel teams throughout New England and the Northeast, more than 250 strong, for the 19th year in a row.

The Berkshire Ajax, a club based in Williamstown, Mass., had eight teams compete, including five boys teams and three girls teams.

Four of the teams — the boys U15 and U17 and the girls U12 and U17 all won their brackets.

The U17 boys finished first in its pool, not allowing any goals, then won the final 3-2 on penalty kicks. Out of 14 players, six are from Mount Greylock, five from Mount Anthony, two from Drury and one from McCann Tech. MAU players included Dylan Woodside, Adam Sampsell, David Peterson, Austin Buttle and Franklin Cody.

The U15 boys were second in its pool to a Burlington team that beat them in the pool, but the Ajax won 1-0 in the final.

Four Mount Anthony players competed, including Jack and Ryan Rogge, Luke Williams and Emiliano Salazar.

On the girls side, the U17 went 4-0 and won its pool and more than half the team are from the area schools, including Mount Anthony's Madison Breese and Brenna Harris, Hoosick Falls' Sydney Eggsware, Sam Flohr, Ashley Foster, Darien Morgan and Allison Perry and Cambridge's Grace Snyder.

The U12 team was 5-0 overall, 3-0 in pool play and wins in the semifinal and final. During the pool play, the team outscored opponents 14-3.

Local players include Bennington's Haley Breese, Megan Barilone, Linnaia Connell, Karsen Dunican and Alexa Gerow, along with Rylie Niles from Cambridge.

Other teams that competed were U12, U14 and U19 boys groups and a U14 girl group.

Locals on the U12 team were Mitchell Cody, Tylor Dunican, Peter McKenna and Silas Relle-Neill, all from Bennington. The U14 had Cambridge's Orion Baker-Porazinski, Bennington's Reiss Forest and Leo Sedlock on the squad. The U19 boys had four players who have competed for MAU, including Brad Anair, Garrett Derosia, Andrew Griffin-Leon and Jack Peterson.

The 14U girls, coached by former Hoosick Falls coach Tom Husser, had 12 players from the area. MAU players included Alyssa Bullett, Chloe and Ella Cichanowski, Autumn Connell, Ashley Gruber, Nikita Noyes-Martel, Antonia Pellon, Abigail Shea, Paige Snyder and Phoebe Thomson. Amy Perry from Hoosick Falls and Taylor Stallman from Cambridge also participated.
