Local events planned for 15th anniversary of Sept. 11

BENNINGTON >> The events of Sept. 11, 2001 will be remembered at three programs in the area on Sunday.

Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks, which killed 2,977 people — 2,753 in New York, 40 in Pennsylvania and 184 at the Pentagon.

Two events will be held in Bennington — one in the morning and another in the afternoon. An event in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. is in the afternoon. All three events are open to the public, who are encouraged to attend.

"Remembrance Gathering"

In Bennington, a remembrance will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the 9/11 memorial near the Town Office on South Street. Bennington Select Board Chairman Tom Jacobs will assume the role of "Remembrance Leader" during the event, which will include a moment of silence and the ringing of the nearby bell from the USS Bennington.

"Five years ago Bennington created the most noted 9/11 Memorial in our area and in doing so we believe it appropriate that we now remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001 15 years later," Jacobs said in a news release.

The Quantum Leap Exhibit Program from Mount Anthony Union High School and Bennington College will present the town with a glass mosaic. Members of the MAUHS Choir will also be on hand to perform. Noted pianist, Matt Edwards will play appropriate selections. A contingent of dignitaries will offer their own thoughts concerning the events of 9/11, the victims, the heroic first responders and what the day means to everyone.

"Memorial Service in Hoosick, N.Y."

The town of Hoosick Emergency Services will hold a 15th anniversary 9/11 memorial service at 4:30 p.m. in the village park. The service will begin at 4:00 p.m. with a short ceremony at the peace pole at the village fire station on Griffin Avenue. At 4:15 p.m. several fire departments, rescue squads, police agencies, individuals from local churches and members of government agencies will march down Main Street to the village park where the main memorial service will take place. The Hoosick Community Band will perform musical selections and several guest speakers will attend. A candle light vigil will follow the ceremony. Refreshments will be served following the service.

"Hope and Healing"

The Greater Bennington Interfaith Council will host a "Gathering for Hope and Healing" at 5 p.m. at the Peace Park at the 9/11 Memorial, by the Bennington Town Office on South Street. The gathering on the 15th Anniversary of the attacks and the aftermath is a time of remembrance and our re-commitment to peace. All are invited to bring a candle as part of the memorial.
