Local athletes receive All-Star honors


BENNINGTON >> On Wednesday, the All-Star teams for the four divisions in Vermont state high school boys basketball were announced.

Both Mount Anthony Union High School and Burr and Burton Academy each had one player earn first team Division I honors.

Senior Damon Burgess earned first team honors for MAU, while junior Carter Vickers made first team for BBA.

Each school also had at least one player receive second team honors for Division I.

MAU had three players make second team division I with seniors Tyler Champagne and Jonas Parker, followed up by junior Matthew Anderson.

Junior Griff Stalcup earned second team honors for BBA.

In Division four, the Arlington Middle School boys basketball team had three players receive all-state honors.

Senior Nathan Mattison earned first team honors for the Eagles.

Team captains Austin Hawley and Jared Lacoste each earned second team honors for the Eagles as well.

Hall earn first place honors for Marauders in Short Course Qualifier

TROY, N.Y. >> Over the weekend the Bennington Marauders competed in the Short Course Qualifier meet up at R.P.I.

Grabbing the only first place finish for the Marauders on the day was Phebe Hall, who placed first in the 100 meter backstroke.

Right behind Hall in the backstroke was Grace Burhans, giving the Marauders a first and second place in the event.

Hall also placed second in the 50 meter freestyle and fourth in the 100 meter breaststroke events for the Marauders as well.

Paige Marion had three fourth place finishes for the Marauders, placing fourth in the 200 meter freestyle and in 100 and 200 meter butterfly events.

Along with Hall, Marion and Burhans, the Mauraders had two other swimmers in Emily Tibbetts and Perrin Marion place at least eighth in any event during the meets, allowing the five of them to advance to compete in the Short Course Championships for Bennington.

The first trials of the Shore Course Championships will be held this Sunday at R.P.I.

BENNINGTON >> Late registration and player evaluations for the 2016 season will be held on Sunday, March 6, from 12:30-3:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 8, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the Mount Anthony Union High School gymnasium.

All players ages 9 and up should plan to attend one of the two dates for evaluations unless already on a major league team.

Late registrations will also be taken at this time for any players ages 5 through 12 in the Bennington and surrounding areas.

For all new registrants, a copy of the birth certificate is required at the time of registration.
