Letters: Thanks to those who helped Letter Carriers Food Drive

I want to thank all the people that donated nonperishable items for our National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 10.

Our carriers picked up over 15,720 pounds of food in one day, far exceeding my expectations. It was a huge success, and I was happy to help.

Bennington Anniversary of End of Life Choice Law

On May 20, we will mark the one year anniversary of Act 39, Vermont’s End of Life Choice Law.

Over the past 12 months, we have witnessed the primary benefit of such a law -- it brings peace of mind to those who are suffering the final stages of a terminal illness.

Since passage of Act 39, two Vermonters have requested medication from their physicians but both died without taking it.

Not surprisingly, it appears that in Vermont, as in Oregon and Washington, the pioneers of death with dignity legislation, for many it is enough to know they can shorten their period of suffering if and when it becomes unbearable.

This is a choice most of us treasure.
