Benningtonians went above and beyond during our visit

I would love to let your community know what a wonderful experience we had while visiting Bennington over the Columbus day weekend. We are frequent visitors to Bennington as my aunt lives there and my mother spent some of her youth there.

On Friday night we went to T.J.’s Fish Fry and enjoyed our meal. We were a bit disappointed as they were out of fish, but happy for their business to be that busy. We were the last customers to leave the little dining room house.

At approximately 9:30 my Mom realized she had lost her purse. We narrowed it down to the Fish Fry. Her purse contained some medication she needed. What should we do? There was no phone number in the purse other than her home phone (Saranac Lake, N.Y.). We had family go to her house to see if there was a message on the answering machine. No luck. We were getting more frantic as the minutes ticked by.

My friend and I decided to go back to the Fish Fry to see what time they opened in the morning or to see if they had a phone number listed on the door. When we arrived we were unsuccessful. We peeked in the windows and were unable to see anything because of the lighting.

We decided to call the police department. The dispatcher was wonderfully kind and helpful. I am sure her job is not always the most pleasant, but she was most polite to us. She proceeded to call the owner, Ann. Ann immediately jumped out of her PJ’s and into her clothes to assist these forgetful, stressed-out women.

Upon her arrival we found the purse exactly where Mom left it. We breathed a big sigh of relief and returned to our motel.

We appreciated the owners and the dispatcher for their kindness in a tough situation with strangers far from home. I love small towns and their residents!
