Legacy's Castleton wrestling thriving in academics
Coach Scott Legacy's Castleton Spartans lead the team standings, with an average grade-point average of 3.667. The second-year program also boasts four individuals on the NWCA Division III All-Academic team.
Legacy was the long-time coach of the Mount Anthony wrestling team, before going to Castleton to head up its wrestling program.
Spartan wrestler Jesse Webb, who was a two-time New England champion at MAU, was named to the All-Academic team.
Following Castleton is Top 30-regular Williams College, which checked in second with 3.651, while Stevens Tech with a solid 3.635. Augsburg was fourth with a 3.628 and Washington & Lee rounded out the top five with an average GPA of 3.616.
Overall, 67 different institutions were represented, which accounts for more than 64 percent of active Division III wrestling programs nationwide.
Nominees must have at least a 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) for the previous full academic year. Transfers and freshmen are eligible if they've been in residence at their current institution beginning in the fall of 2016. On the competition side, wrestlers much be a national qualifier in 2016-17 and have a minimum win percentage of at least .500.
40th annual Zem-Benn set for May 6
NORTH BENNINGTON — The 40th Zem/Benn Road Race is scheduled for Sunday, May 6, at the Park McCullough house in North
Bennington. The kids fun run begins at 9:30 a.m. and the 3.8 mile and 10K races start at 10 a.m.

Masters Swim Meet in Bennington
BENNINGTON — The seventh annual Monumental Masters Mini Meet will be held in Saturday, April 7, at the Bennington Recreation Center pool on Gage Street. Adults 18 years and older are encouraged to swim, no prior competition experience is required.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bennington Marauders Swim Team, helping to provide youth swimming for our community.
Warm-ups start at 9 a.m. with the meet's first event beginning at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is $20 per swimmer by April 3, or $25 the day of event. Registration forms are available at the Rec Center or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Bennington Horseshoe Club
The Bennington Horseshoe Club will host four tournaments for the upcoming season.
They will host the Spring Warm Up on May 6, Leon O'Dell Classic on May 27, Cooper Family Classic on July 22 and the Vermont State Doubles on August 26.
The league will be held in the summer months starting on April 23 and each Monday for 16 weeks.
Sign ups for the league will be held on April 14 and 15 at noon on the courts at Willow Park.

MALA is a youth lacrosse program from kindergarten to 8th grade for boys and girls representing Bennington, North Bennington, Woodford, Pownal and Shaftsbury.
Their boys and girls U9 instructional team season starts on April 9 and practices two days a week. Their boys and girls U11, U13 and U15 travel teams practice three to four days a week and their season starts on April 2.

The Early Bird Special is happening now, the cost is $45 and registration closes on March 15.
Kids ranging from three years old to sixth grade can sign up.

First Memorial Soccer Classic in Manchester
MANCHESTER — The town of Manchester will host the Memorial Soccer Classic on Memorial Day weekend, May 26-27 at Dana Thompson Park.
The tournament is open to girls and boys from U10, U12, U14 and U17 teams.
Note that this is not a Premiere Tournament (there are so many choices in the NE for Div1/Premiere). The Manchester Classic is envisioned as a Div2 /3 Family "destination" tournament.
The cost to register a team is $425 for U-10 and $550 for U12, U14 and U17 teams.
There are four games guaranteed for all teams over the weekend.
