Labor Day Weekend police checkpoint yields no arrests, handful of tickets


POWNAL — A police checkpoint held at the start of the Labor Day Weekend netted no arrests and a handful of civil tickets.

Bennington County Sheriff's Department, Bennington Police, and Dover Police participated in the checkpoint which was set up Friday on Route 7. Funding for the checkpoint was provided by the Governor's Highway Safety Program and done in conjunction with the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" effort.

According to Bennington County Sheriff's Sgt. Lloyd Dean, 910 vehicles carrying 1,800 people passed through the checkpoint. Six drivers were screened for alcohol use, but none were arrested. Five vehicles were searched, resulting in three civil tickets for marijuana possession and three for possession of an open alcohol container in a vehicle.
