Keel earns scholar-athlete honor
A couple of days later, Keel received the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association's Scholar-Athlete award (Vermont chapter), making her one of the top five student athletes in the state.
Keel is a multi-sport athlete at Arlington Memorial High School, having accumulated 10 letters in soccer, basketball and track. She was on the all-Marble Valley League team in basketball, won a Division IV title in the 800 meters in the spring and also a championship in soccer last week.
Academically, Keel is at the top of her class with a 96.5 GPA, won the AP Scholar Award and is a member of the National Honors Society.
Keel has also been on the Student Council for all four years of high school, the president of the organization as a junior and senior and also tutors.
Keel is a member of the Environmental Club, volunteers at the Martha Canfield Library and at Hildene in Manchester, and works as a buddy coach for the Arlington TOPSoccer program, for kids with disabilities.
After being chosen by the Vermont State Athletics Directors Association as a scholar-athlete, Keel received a plaque and a $500 scholarship.
"Jamie is a great example of a student-athlete who excels in the classroom and in athletics," said Arlington athletic director Ashley Hoyt. "She has not only perfected the balance of athletics and academics, but she has done it as the class valedictorian, and one of, if not the best, female athlete of her graduating class."
