Hubbard Hall's annual private garden tour features art
CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- Private gardeners in the Cambridge area host a tour every year to raise funds for Hubbard Hall, which paired each gardener with with an artist for sculpture installations on Saturday.
Event organizer Caz Lewis and her husband Kerry Woods moved to Maple Avenue in 1997. The pair started a now one-acre home garden and joined the garden tour shortly thereafter.
Though she did not place her garden on the tour this year, Lewis arranged the tour, saying that Saturday's event was, "kind of an experiment. My thought was that since Hubbard Hall is an arts center, it would be cool to involve artists. There are lots of venues around for painters, but there aren't many that feature scupltors."
Lewis described what went into installing the sculptures: "It's a lot of work for them for a little exposure, but it adds something to the tour."
Roughly 50 area residents and gardeners met at the Cambridge Community Garden and toured the gardens of Tom and Jan Wolski on McMillan Road, Barbara Littenberg and Steve Peterson on County Route 62, Gail and Tom Bearup in Eagleville and Hanni and Gyula Varosy in Greenwich.
At $15 a ticket, the tour acted as both a social event and show of local artists Jordan Becker, Leslie Ferst, Teru Simon and Hanni Varosy.
"We just have a lot of gardeners in this area, and it's just fun to see what other people do," Lewis said. (The tour gardens) are all very different. One of them is using mostly native plants, another is a more Italianate garden One is down by the Battenkill (River), carved out of the forest."
