H.F. advances to regional final

Wednesday November 7, 2012

CANTON, N.Y. -- The Hoosick Falls Central School boys soccer team is getting used to these close games.

The Panthers needed overtime against Section X champion Canton on Tuesday, but a goal by Chris LaCroix shortly into the extra session propelled Hoosick Falls to the regional final.

It was the fifth one-goal game in a row in the playoffs.

"We had a quick counter attack," said Hoosick Falls (17-5) coach Mike Young. "Tyler [Carr] moved the ball upfield and slid it to Chris inside the 18 [yard box] and Chris finished. It was a beautiful goal."

Canton (9-5-4) hung tough through the first half, but Hoosick Falls dominated the play in the second. The Panthers almost scored a goal halfway through the second but the Canton goalie made a diving save up and to his left to keep it scoreless.

The Hoosick defense was just as strong, allowing no goals for the second straight game. Noah Chani had nine saves and defenders Taylor Baker, Jason Woods, Evan Phillips, Justin Gaines and Cody Gaines kept Canton away from the net for most of the contest.

Hoosick Falls will travel north again to face Section VII champ Lake Placid at a time and place to be determined.
