Hearing date set on bid to buy former North Adams Regional Hospital

NORTH ADAMS -- A court hearing to finalize the sale of the former North Adams Regional Hospital has been set for next month.

According to U.S. Bankruptcy Court clerk Jim Lynch, the judge will entertain a motion on July 31 to close the bidding and award the sale to the highest bidder. Once the highest bid is accepted, a closing date to finalize the sale will be set.

As of Thursday, the only bid has been the $4 million offer from Berkshire Health Systems, parent company of Berkshire Medical Center, according to Lynch.

The property and assets of the former Northern Berkshire Health Systems include the hospital, parking garage, office building and grounds, the VNA/Hospice as well as the family practice building and property on Route 2.

At a hearing on Wednesday, the judge approved a motion to allow Berkshire Health Systems to maintain custody and control of patient medical records held by the former hospital.

North Adams Regional closed on March 28 with three days’ notice, leaving 530 workers jobless and Northern Berkshire without local emergency care.

Northern Berkshire Healthcare, the parent company of North Adams Regional, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy shortly thereafter.

While Berkshire Medical Center has submitted its bid, the clock started ticking on a 45-day window for other interested parties to make an offer.

As part of the purchase agreement, Berkshire Medical Center is operating an emergency center at the former hospital rent-free for one year, even if BMC is outbid on the building. Berkshire Medical Center opened its Satellite Emergency Facility in the former North Adams Regional Hospital on May 19.
