Gowan appointed as SVC associate Athletic Director

BENNINGTON — Southern Vermont College Director of Athletics Sharief Hashim announced on Tuesday that Christin Gowan has been appointed the department's associate director of athletics.

Gowan, who was hired as the College's head women's basketball coach back in March, will also take on the role of SVC's senior woman administrator in conjunction with her other duties.

"Christin is a detail-oriented professional whose attitude and creativity will be an asset to the department," Hashim said. "As an administrator, we believe Christin's work ethic and passion for student-wellness programming will allow her to be a positive force across our campus community."

Gowan's appointment allows Southern Vermont to fulfill the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division III Strategic Alliance Matching Grant which it received in 2016. With her newly-assumed role, Gowan will provide compliance oversight, and support the department's business operations, marketing, and fan-engagement initiatives.

"I saw the upward trajectory of athletics here at SVC, and I wanted to be more involved in our growth," Gowan said. "I am honored [Southern Vermont] President [David Rees] Evans and Sharief have trusted me to fulfill this role. I am excited about the opportunity to strategically support our student-athletes and help elevate our athletic department to the next level. I hope to implement standardized procedures that will improve efficiency on campus and maintain the integrity of our department by ensuring we are compliant with all NCAA bylaws and upholding Title IX."

The NCAA Strategic Alliance Matching Grants, as well as the NCAA DIII Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant program, is currently in its 16th year; the 2016-17 academic cycle saw the NCAA award more than $800,000 to the 26 member institutions that collectively received one of the two awards. The two grants aim at encouraging access, recruitment, selection, and the long-term success of ethnic minorities and women in athletics administration and assistant coaching.

Gowan came to Southern Vermont in the spring from Los Angeles, Calif., where she was an assistant women's basketball coach at Occidental University while also serving as a middle school mathematics teacher at Santa Rosa Charter Academy since July 2015. Prior to that, she spent four academic years teaching math at Edison High School in Stockton, Calif.

SVC's new Associate AD graduated from California State University, Stanislaus with her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degree in 2010 before obtaining her Master of Arts degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2013. Gowan spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the Stanislaus women's basketball program through the spring of 2015 after being a four-year player for the Warriors team as an undergraduate.
