Giving thanks by giving: Banner, parent company make food donations to those in need

Posted
BENNINGTON — Local newspaper readers are helping to provide holiday meals to Bennington County residents who are in need.

Representatives with the Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless collected 17 turkeys "with all the fixings" at the Hannafords in Bennington on Thursday afternoon, provided through the Banner's fifth "Feed Your Mind, Feed a Family" campaign.

"This will help a lot of people," Executive Director Christopher Oldham said.

For every newspaper subscription sold from now until Dec. 18, the Banner will donate a meal to the Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless. The campaign is driven by New England Newspapers Inc. (NENI) and a partnership with Hannafords Supermarkets. Similar promotions are running in the other areas covered by NENI.

Oldham and three volunteers with the coalition picked up 17 12-pound Butterball turkeys with all the fixings: Potatoes, stuffing, cranberry and more. Oldham's team worked with Alan English, publisher for NENI, and Gary Lavariere, NENI circulation sales and marketing manager, to load the food into four trucks.

That food will be distributed to people at the coalition's three shelters and facilities, as well as to the coalition's partner agencies, Oldham said.

The goal is to engage readers by connecting with the community in addressing its greater needs, Lavariere said.

NENI operates the Bennington Banner, Brattleboro Reformer, Manchester Journal and Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Mass. In Brattleboro, the Reformer and Hannaford are working together to provide meals through the services of Project Feed.
