Friends fear missing teen drowned in Washington County pond

CALAIS, VT. >> A rescue operation launched after a teen reportedly went underwater at a pond in Washington County and didn't resurface has been suspended for the night.

Vermont State Police say divers will resume the search for the boy in Curtis Pond on Friday. Rescue crews were called to the pond in the town of Calais at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday following reports of a missing swimmer.

An initial attempt to locate the boy was unsuccessful.

With temperatures reaching the 90s on Thursday, the swimming hole was a popular destination for locals to cool off. Friends of the missing teen called police after the boy did not reappear after entering the water.

State police is withholding the name of the missing swimmer at this time.
