Former Vermont Gov. Phil Hoff celebrating 90 years

BARRE (AP) - Former Vermont Gov. Phil Hoff and his wife Joan are going to be celebrating their 90th birthdays in Barre.

The party at the Labor Hall in Barre is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Hoff is turning 90 on Sunday.

A number of Vermont dignitaries are scheduled to attend, including Sen. Patrick Leahy.

Former Hoff aide Tom Davis says Hoff's wife Joan's 90th birthday is within 10 days of her husband's.

Davis says more than 1,000 invitations have been sent out.

Hoff was elected governor in 1962 and served three terms. He was the first Democrat elected governor in Vermont in more than a century.

Many credit Hoff's election with helping turn Vermont from one of the most conservative states in the country to one of the most liberal.
