Fire destroys garage; people asked to clear hydrants

BENNINGTON - A fire that destroyed a garage on Chapel Road Saturday has a local fire department asking the public to clear snow from fire hydrants.

Bennington Rural Fire Department Chief Wayne Davis said a garage fire was reported at 9:01 a.m. at 1507 Chapel Road. The three-bay garage, which contained numerous woodworking tools such as a band saw and a lathe was completely destroyed, however two dump trucks, an excavator, and a tractor were saved with light damage.

"We drove them away while the garage was burning with the help of the neighbors," said Davis.

Another neighbor, Butch Robinson, had cleared the fire hydrant the departments used that had been buried in snow a few days before.

Davis said the department spent about six hours Saturday clearing snow from fire hydrants, but the public is being asked to help with that task.

One firefighter received a minor injury, there were no others reported, Davis said.

Davis said he is not certain what caused the fire, but its suspected a wood stove was involved.

In addition to the BRFD, the Bennington Fire Department, North Bennington Fire Department, and Shaftsbury Fire Department were on scene with the Arlington Fire Department placed on standby. The Bennington Rescue Squad and Bennington Police also assisted.
