Feed your mind, and a family

BENNINGTON — Local newspaper readers can help an organization provide holiday meals to Bennington County residents who are in need.

The Banner's fifth annual "Feed Your Mind, Feed a Family" campaign has returned this holiday season, partnering with Hannaford Supermarkets in Bennington and local newspaper readers to help provide individuals and families in need with Thanksgiving-inspired meals.

For every newspaper subscription sold between now and Dec. 18, the Banner will donate a meal to the Bennington County Coalition for the Homeless.

The campaign is driven by New England Newspapers Inc. (NENI), which operates the Bennington Banner, Brattleboro Reformer, Manchester Journal and Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Mass. In Brattleboro, the Reformer and Hannaford Supermarkets are working together to provide meals through the services of Project Feed.

The goal is to engage readers by connecting with the community in addressing its greater needs, said Gary Lavariere, NENI circulation sales and marketing manager.

"This is because we're a locally owned company and we want to show our support," he said. "We want to help people in need during the holiday season, who deserve a holiday dinner."

Since the annual campaign started, it's helped thousands of individuals across southern Vermont, said Christopher Oldham, BCCH executive director.

"The holidays are stressful for a lot of people — some people don't know whether they'll be able to serve meals for their families this season," Oldham said. "A lot of people rely on agencies to help them. This campaign is one thing that eases the pressure off of families."

The coalition's sites in Bennington will distribute the food — a turkey dinner with all the f ixings will be served, Oldham said. Meals will also go to families that are served by the group's transitional programs, he said.

The agency also works with other organizations to make sure others can benefit as well, he said.
