Expanded North Adams Farmers Market opens Saturday


NORTH ADAMS -- The North Adams Farmers Market will return for its fourth season on Saturday morning bigger than ever.

The market has continued to grow since being established since 2011, Veronica Bosley, the city's director of tourism and community events, said Thursday, and 14 vendors are slated to peddle their wares on Saturday's opening day.

"Last year, people were selling out almost every week," she said. "People seem to be getting more in touch with local food. It's great that we live in an area where we have all those resources to take advantage of."

The market will run at the St. Anthony Municipal Parking lot, at the intersection of St. Anthony Drive and Route 8, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Oct. 25.

One newcomer will be the Clarksburg Bread Co., which will serve up a variety of bread, cookies, granola and other baked goods.

Mountain Girl Farm of North Adams will offer baked goods, fresh eggs and goat milk products, including soap. Joining the owners will be Bugs, a goat that serve as the farm's mascot.

This year also marks the first in which a vendor will offer homemade alcoholic beverages. Artisan Beverage Corp. of Greenfield will be selling its signature drinks, Ginger Libation and Green River Ambrosia, as well as kombucha.

Returning for another year are vendors which include Country Dream Farm, Jaeschke's Orchard, Many Forks Farm and Square Roots Farm,

Some changes were made behind the scenes as well, Bosley said. Market co-managers will be in charge of logistics the day of the market and aid in recruiting new vendors.

A partnership with nonprofit Wholesome Waves will continue this year, Bosley said. Residents who spend Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will have the amount doubled.

Credit and debit cards will also be accepted as payment, she said.

The market is also meant to serve as a meeting spot and cultural event.

"Our goal every week is to have live music," Bosley said. "We also plan on holding a raffle every week, with an item donated by a local vendor. Mount Williams Greenhouses donated an item for the opening day."

Everyone who enters the weekly raffle will be automatically entered for a Thanksgiving basket at the end of the market's season in the fall, she said.

Some "coming attractions" in future market dates include tables and chairs for attendees, Bosley said, and vendors who offer seasonal items, including blueberries.
