Escapee arrested at Route 7 motel

Posted
BENNINGTON — A local man who had escaped from community supervision was arrested at a Route 7 motel Tuesday afternoon, police say.

Richard Stewart, 34, was taken into custody at the Apple Valley Inn, according to a press release from Bennington police.

Officers had been actively looking for Stewart over the last week after he had been placed on "escape" status by the state Department of Corrections. Bennington police received information at about 1:30 p.m. that Stewart was in a room at the motel at 979 Route 7.

Stewart originally refused to exit the room he was in, police said. Bennington officers, troopers with the Vermont State Police and officers with DOC secured the property.

An officer spoke with Stewart while he was still in the room. After about 30 minutes, Stewart exited the room and was taken into custody without incident and he was turned over to DOC.

Stewart was listed as in custody on the DOC's online inmate locator. His criminal history was not listed.
