Mathew Bush receives Dean’s Scholar award

CASTLETON -- Castleton student Mathew Bush of Bennington was the recent recipient of the Dean’s Scholar Award.

The Dean’s Scholar Award is a newly created award developed to honor students with the strongest presentation at the annual Castleton Scholars Celebration: A Showcase of Original Student Work.

Castleton is small enough to be a community where every student matters, yet offers more than 30 academic programs, 20 intercollegiate sports, and over 40 clubs and organizations. The college stresses community service and provides exceptional programs for first year students.

Local students receive Castleton College award

CASTLETON -- Several local Castleton College students were recently awarded the Academic Excellence Award for the 2013-2014 academic year.

The Academic Excellence Award is given annually to a student who is deemed the top student in his or her major.

The recipients are as follows: Amanda Lacroix of Manchester Center, in English; Molly Stratton of Bennington, in Psychology; Jessica Marie Goodman of North Bennington in Sociology.

Weston Lozier named to Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society

TROY, N.Y. -- Hudson Valley Community College student Weston Lozier of Pownal was recently inducted to Phi Theta Kappa, the international academic honor society for two-year institutions of higher learning.

Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is indicative of academic excellence. Those inducted are matriculated students who have met standards including a GPA of 3.71 or higher. The college’s Alpha Xi Sigma chapter recognizes and promotes scholarship, develops leadership, encourages service and cultivates fellowship among qualified students of the college.

Girls on the Run Annual Run/Walk to celebrate the potential of Vt. girls

BRATTLEBORO -- Now in its 15th year, Girls on the Run Vermont announces its annual Southern VT 5K Run/Walk, which takes place Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Brattleboro Union High School. This event is the culmination of GOTRVT’s 10-week afterschool program for 3rd to 8th grade girls and is open to anyone who wishes to participate or attend as spectators.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Scholarship Fund at Girls on the Run Vermont, a non-profit organization that helps inspire girls to develop physical, emotional and social well-being, offering strategies for dealing with everything from body image and bullying to peer pressure and the media, in healthy, positive ways, including exercise. This interactive educational program, delivered by over 700 volunteer coaches across Vermont, fosters a sense of self-esteem, team-work, compassion and community. This year, the Girls on the Run Vermont program, along with Girls on Track for 6th to 8th grade girls, will reach 3,000 girls throughout the state at over 140 schools.

Registration for the 5k is $10 for children, $20 for adults and $40 for a household of three or more. Online registration ends midnight May 15 at, where mail-in reg forms can also be downloaded and sent to 22 Browne Court, Ste 103B, Brattleboro, VT 05301 (must be postmarked by May 11). Day-of-event registration is from 8:30-9:30 a.m. (cash or check only) and the adult fee will be $5 more. The first 100 members of the public who submit a registration (regardless of method) receive a free GOTR 5K T-shirt. Girls in the GOTRVT program are already registered for the 5k event

Volunteers are needed to help with the 5K, at the start and finish lines, at water stops and along the course. Individuals, families and groups -- school clubs, sports teams and others -- can sign up in advance to volunteer.
