Robertson scores winner for Cambridge
CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. >> In the last game of the Wasaren League season, Cambridge topped Waterford, 2-1.
The first half was played relatively level, with both sides generating some great opportunities, and both goalkeepers making great saves to keep their teams in the game. The second half opened with Cambridge scoring less than two minutes in when Max Ratelle lofted a shot from 25 yards out that glanced off the keeper's hands into the far 90. Waterford's Hunter Guertin struck 15 minutes later, beating the Cambridge keeper with his own far post shot. The final 20 minutes exhibited another series of great runs and equally great defensive stops and keeper saves by both teams, until Patrick Robertson found Eli Robertson in the box to put Cambridge up a goal with under 5 minutes to play.
Cambridge ends the year at 12-3-1 and awaits playoff seeding today.
SVC sweeps XC awards again
BENNINGTON >> For the sixth time this year, the Southern Vermont College men's cross country team has swept the New England Collegiate Conference weekly awards as sophomore Stephen McCall and freshman Davante Smith have been named the Runner and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the period ending October 16.
This is the second time during the 2016 season that McCall has taken the top weekly honor after he picked it up on September 26. Smith is earning his fourth rookie accolade, securing it after each of SVC's last four races. The Mountaineers have now taken both Conference awards after all six meets they have participated in this year.
McCall had a stellar race on Saturday, finishing at 23rd in a tough field that included 193 runners at Western New England University's Golden Bear Invitational. He crossed first for SVC once again, coming in at 28:04 for a split time of 5:39 per mile on the 8,000 meter course.
Smith also ran extremely well for Southern Vermont on Saturday, placing third for the Mountaineers at the Golden Bear. He came through with a time of 28:57 on the 8k course to take 49th overall.
McCall, Smith and SVC are back at it this upcoming Saturday with their final regular season race, Williams College's Plansky Invitational at Mount Greylock Regional High School being the team's final chance to prepare for the upcoming NECC Championship.
Madore breaks records, named Player of Week
BENNINGTON >> After breaking a pair of career program records, Southern Vermont College sophomore captain Molly Madore was named the New England Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the period ending October 16
Madore had an historic week, breaking the school's all-time scoring record to help the Mountaineers go 1-1 in league action. She tallied both goals of a 2-0 win over Mitchell College on Wednesday, and the captain then helped the SVC defense keep Elms College out of the net during regular play on Saturday before EC won on an overtime penalty kick.
Madore's first goal against Mitchell tied SVC's all-time scoring record, and she then became the program's career leader in goals (28) and points (66) as she added an insurance tally while helping to keep the Mariners off the board.
This is Madore's first career Player of the Week laurel and the second for a Mountaineer this season as classmate Ally McNamee picked it up on September 26.
Madore and SVC are back in action today when they host Becker College at 3 p.m.
McGovern Named NECC Rookie of the Week
BENNINGTON >> The New England Collegiate Conference has announced its weekly award winners for the period ending October 16, 2016 with Southern Vermont College junior Paddy McGovern being tabbed the Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
This is the second time for McGovern to pick up the rookie honor as he also took it home on September 19. It is also the third such laurel for Southern Vermont as freshman Chris Jimenez was bestowed with it on September 26.
McGovern had a great week for Southern Vermont, notching six goals in a win at Wheelock College on Tuesday as SVC went 1-1 on the week. The junior rookie now has 15 goals on the year, ranking eighth in the country and first in the NECC.
McGovern and the Mountaineers are back in action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. NECC home game against Elms College.
