David Wax Museum brings fusion to VAE

Thursday May 2, 2013

NORTH BENNINGTON -- Vermont Arts Exchange's Basement Music Series welcomes Boston's David Wax Museum as they perform "Joyful Mexo-Americana fusion, with virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies" (TIME magazine) on May 3. Doors to VAE's Basement Music Series concert studio in the Sage Street Mill open at 7 p.m., the show begins at 8 p.m.

According to the New York Times, "David Wax Museum defies easy definition ... humorously confessional in the best American folk-rock vein." David Wax and Suz Slezak form the artistic core of the David Wax Museum, and together with multi-instrumentalist Greg Glassman, fuse traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock to create a Mexo-Americana aesthetic.

Combining Latin rhythms, infectious melodies, and call-and-response hollering, DWM was hailed by TIME for its "virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies" and has built a reputation among concertgoers all over the U.S, Canada, Europe and China for "kicking up a cloud of excitement with their high-energy border-crossing sensibility" (The New Yorker). With the release of Knock Knock Get Up (September 2012), David Wax Museum has reached a level of cross-cultural integration and musical fluency that allows them to speak electrifying and heartfelt poetry with a tongue that is wholly their own.

Tickets to this concert are $18 ($10 for students with valid ID) through Brown Paper Tickets, at brownpapertickets.com or vtartxchange.org/bms.php, or by calling (toll free) 800-838-3006 -- a small processing fee will be charged. Tickets are $22 at the door on the day of show on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dinner and libations are available for sale from Thyme Tables Catering. The Food Truck will be parked in the lot offering, pulled pork, philly cheese steak, hot dogs, Lily's portabella philly, and side salads. No advanced reservations are required.

Up next: Brooklyn's Miss Tess and the Talkbacks intermingle melodic and rhythmic improvisation and interplay with elements of honky-tonk, western swing and golden-era pop standards on May 18. The Basement Music Series gets funky with Bennington's Funk in the Trunk on June 8, and the Chris Bergson Band returns with "Gut-busting, horn-bedecked NY blues" (MOJO) on June 29. On September 8, the world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra brings big band to North Bennington in a special Basement Music Series concert at Bennington College.
