Cooler heads needed on Pownal Select Board
On Sept. 7 - 8 Pownal Politics made the front page of the Benn. Banner and the editorial page under the category "thorns."
The issue is about payroll errors made between 2009 and 2012. If the errors were in 2009 than in all probability they were before 2009.
After reading the Police Report, long-time former auditor Clint Hutchins claims he was aware of the history within the town with regards to the payroll issues. The shortfalls appeared to be errors that were consistent over time and at some points were negligent. He (Mr. Hutchins) indicated that this appeared to him as though this was a performance issue with in the Town Office.
Kauppi claims it was his belief that there was and still is a performance issue with Linda Sciarappa.
Mr. Kauppi added that he, along with other board members will be addressing that particular problem.
If the previous board of auditors had done their job and taken the payroll errors to the right person, (the treasurer, payroll clerk or the board of selectmen), the problem should have been taken care of in a timely manner and the monies would not have been lost and the payroll issues would not been waiting for new auditors to address them.
If cooler heads had been in the majority on the selectboard and the previous auditors had done their job, we would not be where we are today.
The blame and shame belong to you, not Auditors Ray Shields and Betty Baker.
