Chief of Bennington Fire Department honored Sunday
BENNINGTON -- The Bennington Fire Department's own Steve Crawford was honored Sunday after being named Chief of the Year by the Vermont State Firefighters Association.
The association hosted its annual convention in Bennington for the second consecutive year, making Bennington the first town to do so.
Crawford's accolade was announced at the beginning of this year's Bennington Battle Day parade, during which time a letter from Vermont Lt. Gov. Phil Scott to Crawford was read.
"There is something very special about those who choose to devote their lives to public service," Scott said. "For over two decades, you have kept your neighbors safe, allowing them to sleep peacefully at night, knowing you are standing watch."
Crawford said receiving the award was "outstanding," and noted it would be an honor shared amongst his fellow Bennington Fire Department members.
"It's just amazing to have that kind of honor," Crawford said of his award. "Especially on Battle Day."
