Cherise Madigan named Journal editor

MANCHESTER — Cherise Madigan, who has covered the Manchester and the mountains region as a reporter for the Manchester Journal and Bennington Banner, has been named editor of the Manchester Journal.

Madigan, a resident of Manchester, has been writing for the Journal since 2016, and has been a staff writer with the Journal and Banner since April. She grew up in the area and attended Mount Anthony Union High School where she was editor of the student newspaper while also holding a news internship with the Banner.

"Cherise Madigan is one of the most impressive young people I have had the pleasure to meet," said Fredric D. Rutberg, president of New England Newspapers Inc., which operates the Journal. "She is smart and determined, and more important, she is committed to her community. I was thrilled when we hired her, and I am proud that she has become the editor of the Journal."

As editor, Madigan will lead the news-gathering operations at the Journal on a daily basis online and in the Friday print newspaper.

Madigan will work with Greg Sukiennik, the managing editor of the Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal and Brattleboro Reformer, to continue boosting the breadth and depth of local coverage, according to Kevin Moran, executive editor of New England Newspapers Inc.

"Cherise is a real star and top-notch journalist," Moran said. "We and our readers are very fortunate to have her at the helm."

Madigan said since she began at the Journal as a news correspondent, she has "grown to love the work of telling the stories that matter to this community."

"I'm incredibly grateful for the generous embrace I have found in Manchester, and look forward to building my career in a place that I care so deeply for," Madigan said. "I'm honored to assume such an active role in this community. As editor, listening to our readers will be my top priority," she said. "I want to know what topics matter to you, what you want to see more or less of, and what stories need to be told."

Madigan said she hopes to enhance coverage of winter sports in the region, as well as coverage of our local athletes competing at the national and international level. Sharing more of the area's local history, artwork and writing will also be a priority, she said.

"Additionally, I hope to enhance the Journal's collaboration with other local media outlets to ensure that the Northshire is receiving the highest quality local news in a diversity of voices, formats and perspectives," Madigan said. "The more we can work to collaborate, the more the community can benefit."

Madigan has also been volunteering and engaging in community service throughout the Northshire for many years. She received her bachelor's degree in political science and international studies from Nazareth College of Rochester in New York in 2015.
