CCS finalizes goals for new year

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- School board members finalized goals for the new year at Cambridge Central School that include developing a district-wide communication plan.

The board will draft a letter for community members interested in serving on a communication advisory committee to come up with the plan, which will seek to improve outside communications about positive activities, programs, accomplishments and improvements taking place in the school.

Another new goal this year is to examine possible ideas for the "old school" building, a dilapidated structure that is being looked at for sale or demolition. The district’s architectural firm was given approval in September to explore options for the unused building.

Over the course of four workshops, the last of which prefaced Tuesday’s regular board meeting, school leaders agreed to tweak the district’s committee structure by broadening the scope of an audit committee to include contemplating large financial purchases, such as a gas refueling station at the bus garage; a potential cost-saving idea previously broached by board member Lillian Herrington.

Board member Tom Wolski said during Tuesday’s workshop the "finance" addendum to the audit committee seemed redundant because, he said, the school board already served as the district’s chief financial body by approving the budget and any other financial matters through the year.

"We are the finance committee," Wolski said. "We are responsible for the budget. ... I don’t see any problem with how it’s set up."

"Everything you do all year long involves the budget," said school Superintendent Vincent Canini. "The board has been involved, no matter what comes up."

The updated goals reflect progress from last year toward new common core curriculum standards and teacher and staff evaluations. The 2012-13 goals also include an intent to continue evaluating the school board’s current structure, which currently has five members serving three-year terms.

An ongoing goal held over from last year is to have a wholesale review of the district-wide policy manual complete by September 2013.
