Cambridge tops Hoosic Valley, remains undefeated
The Cambridge girls basketball team improved to 18-0 on the season with a gritty 51-43 win at home against Hoosic Valley.
After falling behind by a basket early in the first quarter, Cambridge turned it on late and went on a 9-0 run to close out the quarter.
After a evenly-played second quarter, Cambridge opened up the game in the third as they outscored Valley 17-9 in that frame to take a 13-point lead heading into the fourth.
Freshman guard Sophie Phillips shined for Cambridge in that quarter with 10 of her team's 17 points.
Valley didn't quit and made it a game again in the fourth. They got the lead down to six in the final minute, but a pair of Hailey Herrington made free throws iced the game for the undefeated Cambridge team.
Sophie's 10 in the third seemed to make the difference in the game and she would score a game-high 18 for her team. Recently-returned senior Helen Mooney played a key role for Cambridge, notching 11 points.
Fiona Mooney and Sophie Phillips had solid efforts as well with seven and six points respectively.
On the Valley side, Renee Serafin and Emaleigh Peckman led their team with 14 points apiece. Alex Rifenburg was strong as well with nine points.
Cambridge did a nice job of attacking the paint and were rewarded with 20 trips to the free-throw line in the contest, making 14 of them.
Cambridge is back in action Wednesday on the road against Spa Catholic.
