Bulldog girls win GS at Okemo

LUDLOW -- Olivia Burwell led a trio of Burr and Burton Academy girls in the top-10 as the Bulldog girls won Tuesday’s giant slalom event at Okemo. The BBA boys took second in the three-team event.

Burwell was third overall, followed by teammate Katie Bourque. Sanderson Kemp took seventh, while Haley McGrath was 12th and Casey Apps 14th for the BBA girls, who finished with 19 points to second-place Woodstock’s 26.

Independent Mariah Palmer took top individual honors.

The Bulldog boys (28 points) were runner-up to Rutland (13 points), which was led by individual winner Andy Kenosh.

Tanner McGrath paced BBA with his second-place finish. Tim Swinarton (sixth) was next for BBA after a trio of Rutland skiers. Andrew Sherras took eighth and Scott Trudel 15th.

MAU stops Slaters

FAIR HAVEN -- Shutting down Fair Haven in the third quarter, the Mount Anthony Union High School boys basketball team gained a cushion it never gave back in a 58-46 win on Tuesday night.

"It’s a big road win for us against a good team," MAU coach Dan Sleeman said.

Aaryngston Bibens paced the Patriots (3-10) with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Otis Selib added nine, all in the third quarter.

Mount Anthony led 27-25 at the break and busted out a 16-8 run to lead the Slaters (8-5), 43-33, at the start of the fourth quarter. The Slaters never got closer than seven until the final whistle.

BBA wins 3rd in a row

MANCHESTER -- The Burr and Burton Academy boys basketball team used a 25-4 run in the second quarter en route to a 55-42 win over Brattleboro on Tuesday night.

Down one after the first, BBA started "getting fast breaks, getting the 50-50 balls and getting to the rim," said Bulldogs coach Dave Shehadi.

BBA’s Weston Muench had 15, while Joe Shehadi had 14.

BBA improves to 11-2 on the season, firmly in the No. 3 spot in the Division II standings .

Hoosick finishes second

FORT EDWARD, N.Y. -- Coming up just 130 pins shy of host Fort Edward, the Hoosick Falls Central School bowling team took second at the Adirondack League tournament on Tuesday.

The Flying Forts finished with 3,263 total pins for five bowlers across three games while the Panthers netted 3,133. Schuylerville took third with 2,809.

Hoosick Falls’ scores included Logan Brogue’s high game of 264 and 660 series, the highest in the Southern Division. Brogue was followed by Bryan Callahan (247/657), Josh McCart (225/626), Josh Conn (237/604) and Ken Marbot (205/586).

Hawks ground SVC

LEICESTER, Mass. -- Becker had three players in double figures as the Hawks took down Southern Vermont College on Tuesday night, 63-48.

For SVC, freshman guard Amber Flagg scored a game-high 22 points and Kala McKenzie added another double-double to her season total with a 15-point, 12-rebound performance.

SVC drops to 3-15 and 3-8 in the New England Collegiate Conference.

Ephs double-up SVC

BENNINGTON -- Thirteen players scored for Williams College on Tuesday night as the Ephs routed Southern Vermont, 93-45, in NCAA men’s basketball action.

The Mountaineers’ Taeshon Johnson netted a game-high 22 points, a feat matched by Williams’ Michael Mayer. Tarvaris Jenkins added seven points for SVC (0-19), which trailed the Ephs (18-2) 45-24 at halftime.

S. Vt. Stars tryouts

BENNINGTON -- The Southern Vermont Stars AAU basketball team are having tryouts for an elite traveling girls’ team.

Anyone is eligible to try out, but serious candidates should have the equivalent of a varsity skill level.

Tryouts are Sunday at Mount Anthony Union High School from 1 to 3 p.m. and February 3 and 10 at Arlington Memorial High School at a time to be announced. It’s mandatory to attend at least two of the three tryout dates.

Monument Soccer signups

BENNINGTON -- The Monument Soccer Club has sign-ups next week at the Bennington Sports Center. Monument is a soccer club that participates in the Capital District Youth Soccer League in the spring and runs from April-June with a 10-game season.

Any interested boy or girl from U8-U18 can sign up.

Zemianek road race returns May 5

BENNINGTON -- The 35th annual Steve Zemianek Road Race will take place on May 5 at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington.

There are three different runs, a 3.8-mile course, a 10K course and a half-mile fun run for children.

The entry fee is $15 to pre-register and $3 for the fun run. A family of four can register at a reduced rate of $40.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runner and the top three in each age group.
