Building at Bennington's Four Corners sold
BENNINGTON -- A prominent building at the Four Corners has been sold to a St. Albans-based limited liability company.
The building was once home to Merchants Bank, which last year moved to the former Wendy's restaurant on Northside Drive. Its current tenants include Tropical Rayz, a tanning salon; the Green Spa, a massage parlor; and Here We Grow, a children's consignment shop.
The space nearest to the corner of Main Street and North Street was once home to Nature's Closet, which operated there from 2002 to 2010. It catered to people heading north to the Stratton Mountain and Killington ski resorts. The owner cited the Route 279 additions as his reasons for moving, as he felt they diverted skier traffic around Bennington rather than through it.
According to town records, the building was acquired by Harte Agency Inc. on Jan. 30, 1974. Harte has sold it to Astrum LLC, a St. Albans-based company, for $250,000.
The building's assessed value is $550,000. The sale was finalized Monday.
Records indicate the building is likely to continue being rented to commercial businesses. According to the Vermont Secretary of State's Office, the registered agent for Astrum is Donna Krumm. Attempts to reach Krumm for comment were not successful on Friday. Calls to the Bennington law firm Cummings and Daily, which represents Astrum, were not returned.
The owners of Here We Grow and Tropical Rayz said they had not been aware of the property transfer.
Merchants Bank had a second location in North Bennington which it closed at the same time it moved from the former Harte building. That building it donated to two non-profits, the Fund for North Bennington, and the Preservation Trust of Vermont.
