The Friends of Cheney Library recently held several raffles. The winners are: NAPA bucket, Hope Granger; Maggie Kinney's beauty treatment, the Haynes family; Potter Hill Barn gift certificate, Pat King; Thorpes' Pharmacy basket for kids, Connie Stevens; and the Big Basket of food and gift certificates, Rosemary Andrews.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2018 Vermont Dairy Farm of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes an exemplary farm that demonstrates overall excellence in dairying and is a good ambassador for the dairy industry. It is sponsored by the New England Green Pastures Program and awarded by University of Vermont Extension and the Vermont Dairy Industry Association. Each of the other New England states also selects a winner.
Nominations will be accepted until April 27. Information about the program, last year's recipient and a link to the nomination form can be found at go.uvm.edu/vdfya. Farms that have been nominated previously, but did not win, may be nominated again.
The Compass Music and Arts Center is accepting submissions for the juried exhibit "Barn Art." The exhibit runs from April 6 through June 16. Submissions will be considered by Vermont artists Denise Letendre, Susan Bull Riley and Stephanie Stouffer, and judged based on the submitting artist's interpretation of the "Barn Art" theme. A cash prize will be awarded, along with future exhibiting opportunities at Compass. The submission materials and fees must be received by Feb. 23. Essay competition deadline
The Hildene Lincoln Essay Competition is open to all eighth graders in the state of Vermont. Essays will be judged on the student's understanding of the subject, as well as by her or his ability to convey that understanding through good writing. Winners will receive certificates and cash prizes, as follows: First Place: $1,000; Second Place: $750; Third Place: $500; Up to 10 Honorable Mentions: $250 each.
Students who accept the challenge this year are required to answer the following prompt in no more than 500 words: "Describe a current or recent event in which the actions of a participant(s) may be viewed as patriotic by some and as unpatriotic by others. Discuss the differing points of view. What is your position and why?"
Each student's essay and application must arrive by mail or by hand at Hildene by Feb. 12, 2018. Winners will be notified by March 31, 2018.
Southwestern Vermont Medical Center invites teenagers to design and submit memes, images with text that spread a cultural phenomenon or idea. It's an opportunity for students to bring attention to issues that are most important to them, like dealing with stress, snacking healthfully, understanding parents and getting enough sleep. SVMC's meme competition will run throughout the month of January. Submit a meme as an e-mail attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org for a chance to win movie tickets to Bennington Cinemas.
