Big changes for Evans' News

Evans' News has been in business continually on Main Street in Bennington for what will be 120 years on Jan. 1. I have been working for the business since I was 15 and have owned it outright for 38 years. As I find myself at retirement age, I have made the very difficult and carefully considered decision to close the retail portion of my business in Bennington.

I want to clarify what that means so that there are no misunderstandings. The Manchester store, Evans' Inc., will continue its normal operations. The Bennington store will maintain its contact information with the same phone and fax numbers and email address, and the corporation will stay intact. We will continue to provide service, orders, quotes and deliveries to our commercial accounts. However, the gifts, clothing, food, and souvenirs will be reduced through discounting over the next few months. We will offer anything in-house at 20 percent off with no exclusions.

We have always maintained a healthy, cooperative, mutually beneficial relationship with our town employees, our vendors, our colleagues, and organizations such as The Chamber and The Better Bennington Corporation and we fully expect that to continue. While this has been a long process of thought, analysis and soul-searching, I feel as if the time is right for this next step in the life of Evans' News.

We will continue our active Facebook page and encourage you to check the page frequently for updates and information going forward. Upon the closure of the retail portion of Evans' News, we will shift that page to Evans' Inc. and continue to keep you informed about what is going on in both locations.

We wanted to put this out to our community in the form of this column to head off conjecture and inaccurate information. We will truly miss the day to day interactions with our friends, neighbors and colleagues, but none of us is going anywhere and we will continue to serve you, work on community events, and see you downtown.

We want to take this opportunity to offer our most sincere thanks to The Town of Bennington, John Shannahan at The BBC, The Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce and its staff, our professional colleagues, especially those on Main Street, my employees throughout my years of ownership, and most importantly our customers who have supported us for so many years.
