Bennington Museum ABCs presents ‘Meet the Brighams’
BENNINGTON -- On Thursday, April 25, at 1:30 p.m. Bennington Museum’s ABCs presents "Meet the Brighams." This month the group meets two of the museum’s favorite early Vermonters, via their portraits that have been newly installed in the Center Gallery. Taking a close look at their paintings, we see what there is to learn about Paul and Lydia Brigham. By studying their portraits, the participants try to imagine what they were like and what they may have been thinking. We will also explore the contents of a piece of furniture you might have found in the Brighams’ dining room, and then join them for an imaginary tea party. The program includes stories and art projects that reinforce what we learn.
The Brighams lived in Vermont during the early 1800s. Paul Brigham was born in Coventry, Connecticut and settled in Norwich, as a farmer and land speculator. He became a captain in the Connecticut Militia and was a company commander of Continental troops under General George Washington. Later, he became active in the Vermont Militia. He was elected to represent Norwich in the State Legislature in the late 1700s. In 1796 he was elected lieutenant governor, and became acting governor when Thomas Chittenden died in 1797. With the inauguration of a new governor, Isaac Tichenor, Brigham resumed his post as Lieutenant Governor. He continued to serve in that post until 1819, retiring to his home in Norwich in 1820.
Museum ABCs was developed and is presented in collaboration with the Bennington Free Library. It is a story hour that takes place once each month at 1:30 p.m. in the galleries of the Bennington Museum. Created especially for children ages 3 to 5, their parents and caregivers, each monthly program includes stories about the selected topic, visits to galleries in the Bennington Museum to observe and talk about an actual piece(s) of art, and an art or craft activity. All children must be accompanied by at least one adult.
Sponsored by The Bank of Bennington, Museum ABCs programs are free. Registration is not required. Watch for details on upcoming monthly programs that include on May 16, "The ABCs of Architecture."
