Bennington man killed in fire on Lincoln Street

BENNINGTON - A fire Saturday morning on Lincoln Street claimed the life of a 36-year-old local man.

In a written release, state police said the 911 call reporting the house fire came in at approximately 10:47 a.m., at 134 Lincoln St. Scott Moffitt, a resident of the home, was found deceased by crews after the fire was extinguished.

Police said Saturday evening that a cause and origin investigation could not determine the cause of fire, but it was not considered suspicious and Bennington Police Officer David Rowland would be continuing the investigation into a cause of death.

State police said members of the Bennington Fire Department located smoke and flames from all sides of the house upon their arrival, and acted quickly to extinguish the fire to prevent it from spreading to a neighboring home. Mutual aid was requested from other area fire departments including Bennington Rural, Shaftsbury, and Pownal.

Police said home owners Patricia and Larry Moffitt were able to escape from the house, and were subsequently transported to the hospital by Bennington Rescue for treatment of their injuries. Larry Moffitt suffered injuries he sustained while jumping from a second floor window, while police said Patricia Moffitt was transferred to a Massachusetts medical facility for burns suffered in the fire.
