Bennington man accused of multiple thefts in Vermont and Massachusetts

Posted

BENNINGTON — Police have arrested a Bennington man they say is responsible for a string of burglaries and thefts throughout Bennington County and Berkshire County, Mass.

Vermont State Police said Nicholas Leonard, 29, was arrested on April 5 in Lanesborough, Mass. by Lanesborough Police. His arrest led to the recovery a number of items believed to have been stolen. More allegedly stolen property was found after police executed a search warrant at Leonard's house.

Police said their investigation into numerous burglaries, thefts from motor vehicles, and fraud cases between January and April led them to believe Leonard was responsible. He is currently being held without bail at the Berkshire County House of Corrections in Pittsfield, Mass. and is facing charges in that state. It's likely he will be brought to Vermont to face charges here as well, but because of the number of complaints and recovered items, police are still conducting the investigation.

Manchester, Bennington, and Vermont State Police are all involved and intend to begin contacting victims of the thefts to see if any of the recovered property belongs to them. Anyone who has had an item stolen recently is asked to call Vermont State Police at the Shaftsbury barracks or their local police department.
