BBA steamrolls rival Fair Haven

MANCHESTER — Good teams win games with strong play in the second half. That's what the Burr and Burton Academy boys basketball team proved right on Tuesday night, by outscoring Fair Haven 39-16 in the second half, to roll to their sixth victory of the season.

Down by five at halftime, BBA came out on fire from three-point range to start the third quarter, with back to back three balls from Griff Stalcup and Jake Nicholson.

Stalcup, would continue to light it up from three point range in the quarter, nailing his second three-pointer of the night to give a BBA five point lead of their own.

The junior captain in total had 12 points in the third quarter.

"I was able to get to the rim there a lot in the third quarter," Stalcup said. "Because I was able to get to rim it opened up some shots for me on the outside and I was able to knock them down too."

In the first half, Stalcup was not able to get anything going offensively because of foul trouble and only had two points at the half. Because of his inability to get anything going offensively, it affected how BBA offense performed and was a reason why the Bulldogs were down at the half to Fair Haven.

"We need Griff to get us going offensively," said BBA coach Dave Shehadi. "He's one of our captains and when he get's going, it opens up good looks for the other guys on the floor."

In total, Stalcup had a team-high 15 point and was also a force on the boards, grabbing 19 rebounds in the game as well.

Stalcup though wasn't just the only Bulldogs that helped BBA comeback in the second, as Nicholson was also lighting it up from downtown in the second half for BBA as well.

The freshman was on fire in the second half, knocking down two of his three 3-pointers in the half.

"It was awesome," Nicholson said. "It's really exciting to be able to contribute like I did tonight for our team and I felt like really showed people what I can do out there on the court."

Being recently called-up from the junior varsity squad a little over a week ago, Nicholson really had a coming-out party at Tuesday night's game. He, like Stalcup, had a team-high 15 points on the night.

Going into the fourth quarter up 46-40, BBA kept their great play going in the by going on a 11-4 run to start the quarter. By the two-minute mark of the quarter BBA got their lead up to 15 on Fair Haven and were able to cruise to a 67-49 victory.

"This was a great win for our team," Shehadi said. "Beating a good team in Fair Haven really shows how good our team can be this year and hopefully our play in the second half will keep going as we go head into the middle of the season."

Junior Carter Vickers had ten points and nine assist in the BBA win. Camden Bunker also had ten points in the win for the Bulldogs as well.

Fair Haven's Lucas Czarnecki had a game-high 18 points for the Slaters in the loss.

With the win, BBA improves to 6-2 on the season and will have two days to prepare for clash against rival Mount Anthony on Friday night.

"Friday night is going to be a big test for our team, but I think we're ready," Stalcup said. "MAU is a great team and it's a big rivalry in general, so I expect us after the way we won last night to have a chance to beat them on Friday night."

Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
