BBA, Rutland field hockey plays to scoreless tie

RUTLAND — The Burr and Burton field hockey team faced off with Rutland on Thursday and both teams ended the game the same way they started, in a 0-0 tie.

BBA's Hannah Callen had eight saves, while Rutland's Emily Lanzillo came up with seven stops.

"It was a fast, highly-skilled game today," said coach Barb Miceli. "Rutland had the edge during the first half and BBA had the edge in the second half and the overtime, but both teams' defense held strong and both goalies came up with some big saves to keep the game scoreless."

Spa Catholic edges Panthers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Spa Catholic golf team got wins from its top two golfers and tied the No. 4 and No. 5 matches to sink Hoosick Falls, 3-2, on Thursday.

Terel Tillman topped Ryan Bloomer 3-and-2, while Ben Scammel won against Mathew Smith 4-and-2. Connor Smith earned a victory at the No. 3 spot, 1-up against Jay Flynn, while Miles Smith tied Jake Welcome and Stephanie Merwin tied Jack Costantino.

Tillman was the medalist with a score of 36.

Hoosick Falls plays tomorrow against Waterford-Halfmoon at Fairways of Halfmoon.

Panthers blanked on pitch

GREENWICH, N.Y. — Greenwich scored three first half goals en route to a 4-0 win over Hoosick Falls on Thursday.

Goals were scored by AJ Rymph, assisted by Henry Hansen, John Swertner assisted by Matthew Telesco and Liam Kelleher assisted by John Swertner. The second half of the game started in the same fashion as the first half with Henry Hansen scoring a goal from a Luke Jordan assist just two minutes into the half.

Hoosick drops to 1-3 and are scheduled to host Cambridge on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

MAU sweeps opening meet of the season

RUTLAND — The Mount Anthony boys and girls cross-country teams each won their events at Wednesday's meet at Rutland.

On the boys side, MAU won with 31 points, followed by Rutland's 53, Burr and Burton's 91, Mount St. Joseph's 93 and Otter Valley's 95.

Evan Page was the top finisher for the Patriots, setting a course-record with a time of 18 minutes, 56 seconds. Asa Burrows-Crane was second for MAU in 19:41, followed closely by Shawn Tobin's 19:44. Austin Buttle was fourth in 20:51 and Noah Payne finished the scoring with a time of 21:23.

On the girls side, Mount Anthony won a closely contested match with 34 points. Rutland was second with 41, BBA next with 45 and Otter Valley at 109.

Sarah Umphlett was the first finisher for MAU, crossing the line in 21:48. Paige Greenawalt was second in 22:27 and Maggie Payne was third in 22:50.

Makayla Gelheiser was fourth for MAU in 26:32 and Amelia Schroeder was the final scorer in 26:59.

Locals win horseshoe contest

SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. — The Schaghticoke Fair Horseshoe Pitching Tournament championship went to a pair of local pitchers. Shaftsbury's Leon O'Dell and Bennington's Dennis Collette played as partners in the event. Each got a trophy and $40 for the victory.

Steve Colvin 5K

HOOSICK, N.Y. — The fourth annual Stephen Colvin Memorial 5K is coming on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Wood Memorial Park in Hoosick Falls. The race will begin at 9 a.m. from the park and money raised will benefit the Stephen Colvin Scholarship Fund awards.

Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female overall finishers in both the walk and run categories. Also the top male and female in each of the following categories will receive a medal: 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and over.

T-shirts will be available while supplies last. Early registration is $10 by Sept. 20 and $15 until race day. All students are $10 for registration.

3D Archery competition

BENNINGTON — The Catamount Bow Hunters will host their final 3D shoot of the year on Sept. 17.

Registration is from 7 a.m. to noon and costs $10 for adults, $5 for youths and cubs are free with paid adult. Food and beverages are available and everyone is welcome.

Arlington coach openings

ARLINGTON — Arlington Memorial High School & Middle School has three coach openings for the 2017-2018 school year: middle school boys head basketball coach, varsity boys head basketball coach, and varsity baseball head coach.

Coaches oversee all aspects of their program. The positions are open until filled. Interested candidates should submit a completed Coaches Application form, which can be found on the school's website, www.arlingtonmemorialhighschool.org, under the Athletic Department link as well as a resume of coaching experience and a list of references with contact information.

Maple Leaf Half Marathon

MANCHESTER — The Maple Leaf Half Marathon and Kotler 5K will take place on September 9.

The event begins and ends at the Dana L. Thompson Memorial Park. Vermont Route 30 will be closed from the entrance to the rec park to the button roundabout, both east and westbound, from 8am to approximately 8:15 a.m. to allow the half-marathon and 5K runners safe passage. Vermont Route 7A will be closed from the button round-a-bout to Seminary Ave., southbound, from 8am to approximately 8:30 a.m. to allow the half-marathon runners safe passage.

The northbound lane will be open, please DO NOT go south in the northbound lane! All other roads along the course will remain open to traffic, so please use caution!

The Maple Leaf Half Marathon and Kotler 5K is a collaboration between the Manchester Lions Club and Make-A-Wish Vermont. All proceeds are donated back to the community in the form of scholarships, grants, hearing aids, eyeglasses and wishes.
