BBA advances in boys tennis
MANCHESTER — The No. 4 seed Burr and Burton boys tennis team advanced in the Division I tournament with a 4-3 win over No. 13 Burlington on Thursday.
Sam Cochrane won at No. 1 singles in three sets, winning the last two 6-2 and the tiebreaker 10-8.
No. 2 Justin Tegen and No. 3 Justin Walla each won in straight sets, Tegen a 6-1, 6-4 victory and Walla a 6-2, 6-3 win to go up 3-0.
Both doubles teams dropped straight set decisions, Nick Plants and Alex Charette falling 6-4, 6-4 and Michael Hollingshead and Aidan Shaw-Pigeon going down 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
But No. 5 singles Uri Vall clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Isaac Jenemann to advance BBA to the next round. No. 4 Will Simmers retired down 7-5 and 4-0 in the second set.
Burr and Burton will face No. 5 CVU on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal.
MAU tennis season ends
MIDDLEBURY >> The No. 15 seed Mount Anthony boys tennis team saw its season come to an end after a 7-0 defeat at the hands of No. 2 Middlebury on Thursday.
Six of the seven matches were won in straight sets, while Jonny Fitzcharles topped MAU's Luke Williams in a three-setter.
MAU finishes the season at 4-10.
BBA football camp
MANCHESTER >> The Sparxx Athletics football camp for youth players will run from July 11 to 14 at Taylor Field on the campus of Burr and Burton Academy.
The camp, which goes each day from 5 to 8 p.m., will showcase the top college and high school football players in the area in a hands-on experience to improve the grassroots of football.
The cost to attend the camp is $100, and $125 after June 1.
Werner holding annual soccer camps
ARLINGTON >> Retired Arlington and Castleton soccer coach John Werner will again be running soccer camps locally. Werner and his experienced staff are committed to providing a quality camp experience, with the emphasis on learning and fun, at a reasonable cost.
The three camps are as follows:
The Battenkill Soccer Camp for those entering grades 1 through 8 will be held the week of July 18 from 9 a.m. until noon at Greenwich Central School in Greenwich, N.Y. This camp emphasizes the technical development of each player as well as small group tactics. The co-director is Coach Tim Kelleher, Greenwich varsity boys coach.
The Arlington Soccer Camp for those entering grades 1 through 8 will be held the week of August 1 from 9 a.m. until noon at Arlington High School. This camp also emphasizes the technical development of each player as well as small group tactics.
The Arlington Senior Soccer Camp for those entering grades 9 through 12 will be held the week of August 1 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Arlington High School. This camp includes position specific training.
