Act 46 meeting rescheduled
The meeting was originally scheduled for this Thursday, but will now take place on Sept. 14. The meeting agenda has not yet been posted, but the topics to be discussed are expected to include the date of both the community vote and community forums to discuss the proposed merger. Superintendent Jim Culkeen said on Wednesday that committee members, in discussions with town clerks, are eyeing Nov. 7 for a vote, instead of their original goal of Oct. 10.
Culkeen said this week's meeting was postponed due to the articles of agreement still being in the process of being amended after last week's committee meeting, at which Chairman Donald Campbell presented email correspondence from Donna Russo-Savage of the Agency of Education stating that the agency's reading of the law is that North Bennington need not warn a vote on the merger. The committee had previously been advised that if all the districts that make up the Mount Anthony Union did not warn the merger vote, it would automatically fail. North Bennington's school board had been very hesitant to warn a vote that, if passed, would cause them to lose their pre-kindergarten through grade six choice.
Savage's email gave the committee a path forward on that point, said Culkeen, but the articles must now be amended to reflect the new situation, and would not have been completed by this Thursday.
The committee typically meets at 6 p.m. in the conference room at the Southwest Vermont Career Development Center. Video recordings of past meetings are available on Catamount Access Television's YouTube page.
