Accident captured on Web cam

BENNINGTON -- A Wednesday morning downtown crash has been captured on a Web cam, which could help determine whether any citations will be issued.

Bennington Police Sgt. David Dutcher said Kenneth Cestone of Bennington attempted to make a left turn onto South Street from Elm Street shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday morning when his 2007 Volkswagen Passat was hit by a 17-year-old from Bennington driving a pickup. The teen was northbound on South Street, Dutcher said.

The impact of the collision forced Cestone’s vehicle into a third vehicle driven by Charles Hicks, also of Bennington. The vehicles driven by Cestone and the teen sustained heavy damage, Dutcher said.

Cestone is most likely at fault because he was making a left turn, Dutcher said. "He thought he had time. There wasn’t enough time and he got hit," Dutcher said.

Cestone and the teenager received minor injuries, but both declined transportation for medical care.

Police hope to review video captured by a Web cam owned by Bennington resident Tim Hunt. The camera is trained on the intersection and streams the image on the Internet. The camera helped police solve a vandalism case at the intersection earlier this year when a moose statue was damaged.

"We’ll look at it for sure once we receive it but we haven’t gotten anything yet," Dutcher said.

The video may help the investigating offers determine if any citations will be issued. "I suspect they’ll look at the video and make that determination if and when we get it," Dutcher said.
