3 Burlington beaches closed due to blue-green algae
BURLINGTON, VT. >> The presence of blue-green algae has prompted officials to close three beaches in Burlington.
The Burlington Parks and Recreation Department announced Wednesday that North, Blanchard and Texaco beaches are closed to swimmers.
The department says the dog portion of Texaco Beach reopened Wednesday afternoon and all other beaches are open.
Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria can release a toxin that can sicken swimmers and pets. The algae can multiply rapidly in warm conditions.
This is the third time this year that Texaco Beach has been closed due to blue-green algae. Lake Champlain Committee member Mike Winslow says this is due to heat and low lake levels.
