250 NY Guardsmen training for deployment to Kuwait this fall

CORTLANDT, N.Y. >> The New York Army National Guard unit known since World War I as the Harlem Hellfighters has begun two weeks of training ahead of its deployment to Kuwait.

About 250 soldiers in the 369th Sustainment Brigade left the Camp Smith Training Site in Westchester County Thursday morning and headed to Fort Indiantown Gap, an Army National Guard training facility in eastern Pennsylvania.

The unit will train there through Aug. 24. It goes on active duty Sept. 6, when it shifts to Fort Hood in Texas for 30 days of training before deploying to the Persian Gulf.

The Manhattan-based 369th oversees operations of logistics and transportation units that provide support for American troops and their allies.

The unit traces its lineage back to an all-black New York National Guard regiment called up for duty in WWI.
