RUTLAND (AP) - Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says a fire that destroyed a building housing the Rutland Plywood Corp. has caused 170 layoffs.

Firefighters thought that they had put out the blaze first reported Wednesday afternoon, but it re-ignited early Thursday and destroyed the building, despite resumed efforts by about 100 firefighters.

Shumlin says his office has been talking with Mayor Chris Louras, and that a Department of Labor rapid-response team is on the scene to help workers who have lost their jobs.

Shumlin says every state program available to the workers will be brought to bear; meanwhile, he's asking for other employers in the area to step up and hire some of them.

Firefighters don't believe the fires are suspicious and that a mechanical failure was involved.
