WATERBURY - The Vermont Dept. of Public Safety is urging residents and visitors to stay off the ice. Even if a body of water's surface appears to be solid, ice melts from the bottom up, and is likely too thin to walk on. Any ice shanties should have already been removed. Anyone on the ice for recreation or to remove structures is assuming a high risk. It is best to avoid the ice entirely.
If the worst happens, the Coast Guard and National Weather Service recommend the system "Reach-Throw-Go." If someone falls through ice, reach from the shore if possible, throw a rope from shore or go for help immediately.
A person who falls in should not panic. Instead, they should turn toward the direction they came from, secure hands to the unbroken surface and work their way out of the water by kicking their feet.
