DUDLEY, MASS. >> Dudley selectmen have placed an article on the Massachusetts town's May meeting warrant that jeopardizes a controversial proposal to build a Muslim cemetery.

The Telegram & Gazette (http://bit.ly/1QSEnZ1 ) reports that the article would authorize the town to buy the land on which the Islamic Society of Greater Boston wants to build a cemetery.

The town administrator called the move Dudley's "right of first refusal." If the measure is approved at the May 23 town meeting, selectmen will decide whether to proceed.

The Islamic Society has reached a purchase agreement for the land, but needs a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals because the area is zoned residential.

The chairman of the Islamic Society's trustees says the town is "within its rights," but the society is still working for a resolution.
